SENATE BACKS GREENS ACTION CALL ON SHOALHAVEN JOB LOSSES

Greens Kiama candidate Terry Barratt and Senator Lee Rhiannon have welcomed the Australian Senate motion, passed yesterday, that calls on the government to support the Shoalhaven community and responds to the announced closure of the Australian Paper mill.

Australian Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon said: “The Shoalhaven paper mill has been very important to the local economy. Its closure will lead to 75 job losses.

“At a time when the Shoalhaven community is already struggling with unemployment, the Abbott government’s budget cuts caused the removal of the area’s Local Employment Coordinator.

“The Senate has now backed the Greens’ call to urgently reinstate that position.

“The Senate has also backed our calls for the government to maximise paper purchases from local renewable paper producers, which should include the Shoalhaven mill.

Greens candidate for Kiama Terry Barratt said: “This Senate motion is a great boost to our efforts to bring more jobs to the area.  This is a priority issue for the Greens.

“The government can do a lot more to support local jobs growth.”

Greens candidate for the South Coast Amanda Findley said:

“The Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands area has lost over 10,000 jobs since the Abbott government came to office. This must be turned around.

“The CFMEU has estimated that a further 150 flow-on jobs will also be lost in our region.
